Castolon Ranger Station
Castolon Ranger Station
Pastel
13x16
2004

Painted at one of the ranger stations at Big Bend National Park in extreme southwest Texas. It was a bright, sunny day. I don't know how I turned it into a cloudy night.

We were moving from the Chisos Basin campground to the Cottonwood campground, which was down by the river. We stopped at a store by the ranger station and I saw this adobe building wit the ocotillo by the back door, and wanted to paint it. Later that evening as we were relaxing after dinner we heard approaching motorcycles. A few minutes later, 20-30 bikers, with their support van, pulled into the campground and started setting up near us in the otherwise empty campground.

They turned out to be very nice and even apologized the next morning for keeping us awake (they hadn't).
