People love to leave markers showing their presence everywhere. I have seen 10000 year old carvings and hand prints on rock walls, messages in bottles, and especially carefully made piles of stones. These particular stones were on a piece of driftwood on Good Harbor Bay beach in Sleeping Bear Dunes national lakeshore at the northwest corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula. The stone piles won’t survive the next storm, but now they live now in a more durable form.
